The Kasilag Guitar Trio composed of Chito Cario, Dong de Dios and Phil Valdez will perform the guitar works of Filipino composer and Philippine Jazz Pioneer Angel Matias Pea in a concert entitled Philippine Sketches: An All Filipino Guitar Recital on March 16, 2007, Friday 10AM at the Sor Catalina Ledesma Hall of Santa Isabel College, 210 Taft Avenue, Manila.
The repertoire will feature the Philippine premiere of Peas solo guitar works such as Prelude and Fugue, Iyo Kailan Pa Man, Langit ang Ligaya, Langit Ka Sa Lupa, and Sa Batis Ng Ligaya. The program culminates with the world premiere of Sketches for Three Guitars dedicated to the Kasilag Guitar Trio.
Angel Pea, born in Laoag, Ilocos Norte and raised in Malabon, Rizal had early musical instructions from his mother, a singer. He started out as a guitarist for the Malabon Recreation Hall Orchestra playing jazz before WWII. After Liberation, he shifted to playing the double bass and played in leading orchestras and jazz bands in Metro Manila. I
n 1969, he went to Hawaii and worked with the Honolulu Symphony until 1989 as principal bass player. Maestro Pea returned to the Philippines in 2002 and currently resides in Valenzuela City. Peas other popular works include Igorot Rhapsody, Igorot Jazz Fantasy, and the Philippine Festival Overture to name a few.
In the said concert, the Kasilag Guitar Trio also plays works of three national artists for music namely: Col. Antonino Buenaventura, Lucrecia Kasilag and Ernani Cuenco. This event is being presented in cooperation with the Santa Isabel College, Music Department in celebration of Santa Isabels 375th year anniversary. The concert is open to the public for free.
