PhilMusic.com first went online in 1997 and is currently the longest running website focusing on Philippine music news and communities, as well as one of the recognized pioneers of Philippine web content.
Through its history, PhilMusic has been instrumental in introducing the power of the Net to the Philippine music industry. Starting off as the first Philippine music-centric mailing list community (1996) to the introduction of music photography galleries, online news and features, streaming audio and video, celebrity chat events, chat networks, gig guides and online fan forums, weve played a significant role in bringing OPM into the Net age.
Artists as diverse as Joey Ayala, Kulay, Kitchie Nadal, Eraserheads, Put3Ska, P.O.T., Parokya ni Edgar, Wolfgang, Razorback, South Border, True Faith, Rivermaya, Paolo Santos, Sugar Hiccup, Cynthia Alexander, Cooky Chua, Slapshock, Sandwich, Barbie Almalbis, and Gary Valenciano, are among some of the guests who PhilMusic has hosted in its online chat series.
Today the Internet is de rigeur for Philippine music artists. Every band has its own blog, a mailing list, a video on YouTube and a MySpace account, which has paved the way for a revolution in the way Filipino youth discover and appreciate Philippine music. No longer captive to mainstream traditional medias dictates about what people should or shouldnt listen to, todays music tastes are being defined by what the 21st century music fan sees and hears on the Net.
PhilMusics efforts in bringing about this sea change have been recognized by the web industry. From 1998 to 2003, the site won an astounding two awards per year at the Philippine Web Awards both the judges and the peoples choice in the Music category. The sole exception was in 1998 when the site was awarded the PLDT website of the year award, besting all categories. Thats a total of ten awards. In 2005 the website was inducted in the Hall of Fame of the awards body.
PhilMusic in 2007 wears its legacy well and remains an authoritative independent source of whats happening and hip in the local music scene, from the past, present, and future of OPM. Few web domains from the dawn of the local Internet can claim to be as relevant today as when it started.
At the same time, PhilMusic maintains the most active Pinoy musician-oriented community online anywhere. Our forum, Talk@PhilMusic, boasts an active membership of over 15,300 members, exchanging views on instruments, playing techniques, pro audio gear, and music genres. Players looking for other musicians or used gear, keep our classified ads sections happening.
Through its technical innovations and the consistent quality of its web content through the years, PhilMusic.com has emerged as the pre-eminent brand name on the Net associated with Pinoy Music.
