A small crowd of amateur and professional songwriters gathered up for one big night of purely original Filipino music at the 9 Mile Bar along Kalayaan Road in Quezon City. The crusade of songwriters for the recognition of their incomparable songwriting prowess was once again proven its worthiness. Rekindling an old flame that was started by Katha: Organization of Filipino Composers after it was dissolved last year, former Katha members reunited to light the torch one more time.
Nilan Yu and his trusty guitar started the night with his stunning songs. It was like listening to a pinoy David Cook.
While waiting for the other performers to arrive, KuyaKurt with Marvin Bea, both former members of The Blue Martian Cookies Band performed two songs, impromptu, just to keep every minute from drying.
Kada Band accompanied Shereen Nepomuceno as she sang her beautiful “pang masa” appeal song, which was rehearsed with the band only one night before the event.
KuyaKurt rocked the night away with four more songs along with Kada Band’s John “Uglyguy” Menia with his earth-pounding drums, Marvin Bea’s bluesy adlibs and Sir Eric’s pummeling bass lines.
Subway19 Band played their music with passion. This band is one of the artists included in the Access 2 Love Album 2008 that is now on the shelves of every Odyssey Record Bar.
And as the night continued the venue gained more listeners, Francis Funa and Sunshine Selga gave a whole new meaning to the word wonderful as they performed their astonishing songs.
The youthful and energetic aura of Cadence Band nailed the audience to their seats while they executed their original music on stage. And finally, Mency Atienza shared two of her wonderful songs with the captivated crowd.
Guest performers were also present that night. Award-winning composer Girl Valencia made a short speech and delivered her song acapella. Ava of Rock Bato Band jammed with the Kada Band as she presented one of her song.
It was a very successful songwriters’ night and everyone was hoping for another round of it.
The good news is that there will be another Songwriters’ Night which will be held at The Conspiracy Bar along Visayas Avenue on October 20 this year. Everyone is invited to participate in this event and get to know both amateur and professional songwriters. |
