Photo: The venerable Mr. SmithWay before XB, way before NU, Pinoy Rock radio was defined by an AM station called DZRJ, the "Rock of Manila". In fact, the term "Pinoy Rock" itself was created for their radio program "Pinoy Rock n' Rhythm" hosted by the late Howlin' Dave. But you knew all that already. What may be news to you are details about DZRJ's 45th anniversary concert, a jam called "Super Sessions" all set for Oct 25, 2008.
We found bits and pieces of news on the net, and a tiny graphic of the concert poster online at the homepage of RJPlanet.com - home of all things RJ. Oddly enough, clicking on the poster brings up an empty page .
With the help of our virtual magnifying glass (or Photoshop), we were able to read the text on the poster, which goes a little something like this.: 45 years in the making... SUPER SESSION The Founding Icons of Pinoy Rock, Back to Back with Ramon Jacinto and Pepe Smith....

As fas as we can figure out, RJ is aiming for some "SuperBand" approach, getting players from different bands, and mixing them up into big jam session. Or a "Super Session", coincidentally the title of a classic and log-out-of-print Juan de la Cruz live album. (not to mention that 60's classic rock album with Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper, Steve Stills, and company)
But while we dig the fact that Pepe Smith is on the bill (hard to believe that he and Ramon Jacinto are practically the same age), where are his fellow "founding icons of pinoy rock", Wally Gonzalez and Mike Hanopol? Sacrilege!
Well, October's a long way off, maybe they'll find their way into the show.
Allan Roy writes us from our PinoyRock mailing list to say that the concert will recreate the halycon days of DZRJ's parking lot concerts in Sta. Mesa. "They will have flatbed trucks as their stage."
"Also," Allan writes, "An American guitarist who was formerly part of two legendary rock bands MIGHT join the DZRJ Super Session. Negotiations are in the final stages."
Who could this be? Ok, we'll take a wild guess and come up with the name of Jeff "Skunk" Baxter - an alumnus of the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan. Why Skunk? Well he appears to be a friend of RJ, and even showed up to jam at Bistro RJ years ago. So that's our shot in the dark. Interestingly enough, Mr. Baxter is better known today as a defense consultant rather than a musician. ------------------------------------------------------- Video Update: Here's a video of a rehearsal for the gig with Pepe Smith, Louie Talan, Cowboy, RJ, and Wendell Garcia covering the Stones' "Jumping Jack Flash." |
